Review: Blackstar HT Club 40
British company Blackstar Amplification have earned a reputation for producing versatile, reliable, no-nonsense valve amplifiers for the modern player. Their ever-growing roster of endorsers from a wide variety of different musical styles is an irrefutable testament to this.
This time Kitarablogi will take a closer look at the Blackstar HT Club 40 combo (current price in Finland 694 €), which looks like the perfect workhorse for the gigging guitarist.

As indicated by its name, the Blackstar HT Club 40 is a 40-Watt valve combo. The preamp is designed around two ECC83-valves, while the power amp uses a pair of EL34s.
This made-in-China combo is a two-channel affair and comes equipped with a single 12-inch speaker.
One of Blackstar’s trademarks is the clean and crisp, unfussy look – the HT Club 40 means business, and it’s ready to go.
This mid-sized combo weighs in at about 24 kilos, which makes it relatively easy to move around.
The combo’s back is almost fully closed, which makes achieving stack-like tonalities from a combo amplifier easier.
Because of the very small opening – and the compulsory metal safety grille – changing valves is rather tedious, as you will have to remove the whole back panel for the procedure.

…as well as the combo’s quality transformers.
Blackstar have chosen a Celestion Seventy 80 -speaker for the HT Club 40 – a speaker highly regarded for its dynamic and open sound.
A sturdy FS-5 footswitch unit is included in the price.

Even though the Blackstar HT Club 40 is called a two-channel combo, the amp’s many features offer the player a wider palette of sounds than he (or she) might expect from such a compact design.
The clean channel offers you two controls – Volume (gain) and a simple Tone knob. The channel’s Voice switch gives you two different versions of the clean channel.
Boutique Clean has the HT Club 40 working in Class A -mode, which even lets you dial in a good dose of grainy dirt using the Volume knob.
In Modern Clean the amp runs in Class AB, and offers a fatter bass, and a far cleaner overall tone, even at high Volume settings.

The overdrive side offers you separate gain and volume controls, enabling you to get even the most distorted tones at moderate volume levels. This channel is also equipped with its own Voice switch.
Classic Overdrive takes the Blackstar into classic Seventies and Eighties Marshall-territory – the sounds are chunky and tight.
Modern Overdrive gives you more gain, a bigger bass register, as well as a creamy and vocal mid-range.
The overdrive channel also offers a far more versatile EQ-section than the clean channel.
In addition to the fine three-band EQ, Blackstar have included their patented ISF-feature. The settings of the ISF-knob (ISF = Infinite Shape Feature) directly influence the EQ-section’s tonality, as well as the overall tonal response. ISF set to zero (Blackstar call this the USA-setting) results in a very tight bass response with a sharper treble zing, compared to ISF at ten (UK), which sounds fuller and fatter.
The back panel offers you three different speaker outputs…
…a speaker-simulated line out, an effects loop, and the Reverb switch that lets you choose from two different reverb characteristics. The HT Club 40’s fine reverb is digital.

The Blackstar HT Club 40 is a joy to work with! The combo dishes out a plethora of quality tones, and it proved very intuitive and easy to use.
In effect, the HT Club 40 really offers you four quality amps in one package:
Modern Clean is a Fender-like (or Mesa/Boogie-type) clean channel with oodles of headroom. Boutique Clean embodies Class A interactivity – there’s less clean headroom, but the amp reacts organically to your playing dynamics, as well as the volume knob setting on your guitar. Classic Overdrive is the place to go to for all your classic Blues Rock, Hard Rock and Metal needs, with Modern Overdrive catering for the current gain-saturated mosh-pit crowd.
In my opinion the Blackstar HT Club 40 is a fantastic choice for the guitarist on the move. It will give you great tones on stage, as well as in the studio, where using a moderately-sized amp may prove to be a more workable solution than going for a full blown stack.

Brittiläinen Blackstar Amplification on saavuttanut verrattaen nopeasti maineen monipuolisten, nykyaikaisten ja luotettavien putkivahvistimien valmistajana. Yhä laajentuva endorserikatras – josta löytyy niin erityylisiä nimiä kuin Manic Street Preachers ja Dimmu Borgir – kertoo sekin jotain merkin arvostuksesta.
Tällä kertaa katsomme hieman tarkemmin Blackstarin HT Club 40 -komboa (694 €), joka on tarkoitettu keikkailevan kitaristin uskolliseksi työjuhdaksi.

Nimensä mukaisesti Blackstar HT Club 40 on 40-wattinen kitarakombo, joka on toteutettu täysputkikytkennällä. Etuvahvistimessa toimivat kaksi ECC83-putkia, kun taas päätevahvistin saa voimansa kahdelta EL34-tyypiltä.
Kiinassa valmistettu kombo on kaksikanavainen, ja se on varustettu yhdellä 12-tuumaisella kaiuttimella.
Blackstar-kombojen selkeä, siisti ja kaunis olemus on sekin noussut jo yhdeksi firman tavaramerkiksi, ja HT Club 40 jatkaa tätä linjaa.
Blackstarin keskikokoinen kombo painaa hieman yli 24 kiloa, mikä on vielä hyvin roudausystävällinen putkikomboksi.
Lähes kokonaan suljetun kotelon ansiosta, kombosta saa tyypillisten kombosoundien lisäksi myös hyvin uskottavia stäkkisoundeja.
Pienen aukon – ja nykyaikaisten turvallisuusmääräyksien – takia putkien vaihtaminen on hieman työlästä, koska koko takapaneeli on ensin irrotettava, ennen kuin putkiin pääsee käsiksi.
Metalliritilän läpi näkyy kombon putket…
…sekä sen laadukkaat muuntimet.
Kombon kaiuttimeksi on valittu Celestionin Seventy 80 -malli, joka on tunnettu sen dynaamisesta ja avoimesta perusluonteestaan.
Suoraviivainen ja kestävänoloinen Blackstar FS-5 -jalkakytkin kuuluu hintaan.

Vaikka Blackstar HT Club 40 kutsutaankin kaksikanavaiseksi komboksi, on vahvistin – runsaiden ominaisuuksiensa ansiosta – huomattavasti monipuolisempi kuin luulisi.
Puhdas kanava tarjoaa vain kaksi säädintä – Volume (gain) ja helppokäyttöinen Tone. Voice-kytkimellä saa kuitenkin muutettua puhtaan kanavan luonetta perusteellisesti.
Boutique Clean -nimisessä tilassa HT Club 40 toimii tyypillisen A-luokan kitaravahvistimen tavoin, jossa Volume-säätimen avaaminen lisää ensin vain hieman kompressiota ja rosoisuutta, mutta säätimen loppumetreillä soundi muuttuu selvästi säröiseksi.
Modern Cleanissä kombo toimii AB-luokan periaatteella, jolloin bassorekisteri on muhkeampi, ja signaali pysyy siistinä miltein koko Volume-säätimen skaalalla.

Särökanava tarjoaa erilliset Gain- ja Volume-säätimet, minkä ansiosta rankkoihin särösoundeihin pääsee käsiksi myös hyvin maltillisellä volyymitasolla. Myös tässä kanavassa on oma Voice-kytkin.
Classic Overdrive vie Blackstarin soundia klassiseen 1970- ja 80-luvun Marshall-alueeseen – soundi on rouhea ja kiinteä.
Modern Overdrive lisää menoon sekä hieman gainia että aimon annoksen potkua ja laulavaa keskirekisteriä.
Särökanavan EQ-osasto on huomattavasti runsaammin varusteltu kuin Clean-kanavan yksittäinen Tone-säädin.
Säröpuolelta löytyy kunnon kolmialueinen taajuuskorjain, sekä Blackstarin patentoitu ISF-kytkentä. ISF-säätimellä (ISF = Infinite Shape Feature) pystyy vaikuttamaan portaattomasti EQ-osaston luonteeseen ja soundiin. Nolla-asento (Blackstar kutsuu sitä USA:ksi) tarjoaa tiukempaa bassorekisteriä ja purevampaa diskanttia kuin täyteläisempi UK-vaihtoehto ISF-säätimen toisessa ääripäässä.
Takapaneelista löytyy kaiutinlähtöjen lisäksi vielä…
…linjalähtö kaiutinsimulaatiolla, efektilenkki, sekä Reverb-kytkin, jolla voi valita yhden kahdesta laadukkaasta digikaiun luonteesta.

Blackstar HT Club 40 -komboa on ilo soittaa! Vahvistin tarjoaa yllin kyllin erilaisia laatusoundeja, ja käyttökokemus on hyvin intuitiivinen ja helppo.
HT Club 40:ssä on ikäänkuin neljä erilaista vahvistinta samassa kuoressa:
Modern Clean on Fender- (tai Mesa/Boogie-tyylinen) putipuhdas valinta isolla headroomilla. Boutique Clean taas tarjoaa kaikki interaktiivisen A-luokan vahvistimen ilot – puhdas headroom ei ole tarjolla niin paljon, mutta vahvistin reagoi hyvin mukavasti soittodymaniikkalle ja kitaran volume-säätimelle. Classic Overdrivesta saa irti kaikki klassisen Bluesrockin, Hard Rockin ja Metallin soundeja, kun taas Modern Overdrive tyydyttää varmasti nykyaikaiset kitarasankarit.
Mielestäni Blackstar HT Club 40 on loistava valinta ravintola- ja klubikeikoille, sekä studiossa, jossa vuotoäänien minimoimiseksi keskikokoinen kombo voikin olla parempi valinta kuin iso stäkki.

Review: Blackstar HT Club 50 and HTV-412A
Blackstar is one of the hottest guitar amp companies around at the moment. Their first Series One -heads have found their way into many a professional’s back line, due to their muscular tone and extreme versatility. Their more recent sweet little HT-5 and HT-1 combos can already be found in many studios and living-rooms around the globe.
New from Blackstar comes the HT-Venue-range. This series promises to offer more affordable amps that still aim to give you the full ”Blackstar Experience”.

Kitarablogi.com got the 50 Watts HT Club 50 head (current price in Finland: 591 €), as well as the Celestion-equipped HTV-412A cabinet (current price in Finland: 435 €) for reviewing.
The whole Blackstar range is engineered in the UK, but built in South Korea. The Venue-half-stack looks very stylish, with somewhat more of a vintage-type charm compared to Series One models.
Workmanship is top-notch – this gear clearly made to stand the rigours of the road.

The HT Club 50’s two-switch pedal is a sturdy little number…
…but I feel that its practicality could be improved significantly with some skid-resistent material stuck to its underside.

The head’s insides look very tidy, and the quality of the components used is reassuring.
We find a pair of ECC83-tubes working in the HT Club 50’s preamp, as well as twin EL34s making up the power amp section, which steers performance expectations in a Marshall-ey sort of direction.
The HT Club 50 sports three cabinet outputs on its back panel for different cabinet configurations…
…as well as an excellent speaker-emulating direct output. The Reverb-switch offers you the choice between a full-bodied version and a leaner counterpart of the nice digital reverb’s offerings. Next to it there’s the effects loop.

Blackstar’s angled HTV-412A cabinet can be run in mono or in stereo, the latter splitting the cabinet’s four 12″ speakers into groups of two.

The head is a two-channel affair, but as usual with Blackstar, each channel has its own ace up its proverbial sleeve:
The Clean channel is ease-of-use embodied, offering only two simple controls for volume and tone. But the Voice-button opens up the gates to two different worlds of clean:
Modern Clean has headroom in spades and stays clean and transparent at virtually all gain settings, regardless of the guitar used.
Boutique Clean, on the other hand, is a much more interactive beast, with some tasty sag, compression and even overdrive on offer, once you turn up the wick a little bit (or when using hot pickups).

The Overdrive channel offers a bit more in terms of adjustability: Adding to the gain and channel volume knobs, it has a three-band EQ, as well as Blackstar’s ingenious ISF-control.
ISF stands for Infinite Shape Feature. While the knob may have been placed together with the tone controls, ISF offers far more than a simple tone-tweaking. With ISF at zero the amp behaves like a typical US-style amp – there’s a tight bottom end, the attack is very precise and the tone has a light loudness-curve applied. With ISF at ten the amp sounds significantly warmer with a crunchy mid-range and a healthy amount of softening sag at higher gain levels.
When you keep in mind that the Overdrive channel also is equipped with its own Voice-switch – Classic Overdrive leaning towards typical Marshall-territory, and Modern Overdrive going the Rectifier-way – the options opening up before you are sheer endless and truly staggering.

In my opinion Blackstar’s HT Club 50/HTV-412A half-stack is one of the best guitar amps out there at the moment, not even taking into account its relatively low price. It is quite rare to find an amp, which gives you great clean and overdriven tones from the get-go, without having to touch the EQ section first. Blackstar’s HT Club 50 is one such amp, where the EQ section is really only used for fine-tuning the tone, and not for rectifying the amp’s shortcomings.
Yes, there are a few finer details where corners have been slightly cut (in comparison to a Series One head) to be able to achieve the HT Club 50’s keen price point, but it still gives you the genuine Blackstar-tones and -versatility, without any foul compromises.
Due to its versatility this is one amp that’s hard to pidgeonhole into a one-trick pony. The HT Club 50 is a great choice if you appreciate versatility in a gig-worthy package.

Blackstar on yksi tämän hetken kuumimmista nimistä kitaravahvistimien keskuudessa. Alkuperäinen lippulaivasarja Series One on löytänyt tiensä monen ammattilaisen backlineihin erittäin terveen perussoundinsa ja monipuolisten muokkausmahdollisuuksiensa ansiosta. Myös pikkuiset HT-5 ja HT-1 -kombot laulavat nykyään jo monissa studioissa ja olohuoneissa.
Blackstarin uutuus on HT-Venue-mallisto. Sarja tarjoaa hieman edullisempia vahvistimia, joista pitää kuitenkin lähteä se aito Blackstar-soundi.

Testissä oli Venue-sarjan 50-wattinen HT Club 50 -nuppi (591 €) sekä neljällä 12-tuumaisella Celestionilla varustettu HTV-412A-kaappi (435 €).
Englannissa suunniteltu ja Etelä-Koreassa rakennettu puolistäkki on erittäin tyylikäs kokonaisuus, jolla on Series Oneen verrattuna hieman hillitympi, vintage-tyylinen charmi.
Työnjälki on erinomainen, ja sekä nuppi että kaappi on selvästikin suunniteltu ammattivaatimukset täyttäviksi.

…mutta olisin mielelläni nähnyt sen pohjassa jotakin liukumista estävää materiaalia.

Nupin sisäinen siisteys ja käytettyjen komponenttien laatu vahvistavat vaikutelman tämän putkilaitteen luotettavuudesta.

Blackstar-nuppi on kaksikanavainen, mutta kummallakin kanavalla on – firman tapaan – oma ässänsä hihassa:
Puhdas Clean-kanava näyttää hyvin simppeliltä – kanavan volume-säädin, sekä yksi master tone. Voice-kytkin antaa käyttäjälle kuitenkin mahdollisuuden valita kahden eri vahvistintyypin välillä:
Modern Clean on putipuhdas, helisevä ja runsaalla headroomilla varustettu vaihtoehto, joka pysyy vankkaasti puhtaana volumen asetuksista ja kitaratyypistä riippumatta.
Boutique Clean taas on selvästi kaksikon juurevampi tapaus, jolla volumen lisääminen – tai tehokkailla mikeillä varustetulla kitaralla soittaminen – johtavat kompressioon ja loppumetreillä myös soundin herkkullisen rosoiseen säröitymiseen.

Overdrive-kanavan varustus on Clean-kanavaa runsaampi: Gain- ja kanavavolume-säätimien lisäksi on tarjolla kolmialueinen EQ, sekä Blackstarin patentoima ISF-säädin.
Lyhenne ISF tulee sanoista Infinite Shape Feature. Vaikka säädin on sijoitettu EQ-osastoon, sen toiminta ulottuu paljon laajemmalle alueelle. Kun ISF on nolla-asennossa vahvistimen särökanava kuulostaa amerikkalaiselta vahvistimelta ja käyttäytyy sellaiseen tavoin – basso on hyvin tiukka, atakki on tarkka ja soundissa on kevyt loudness-tyylinen EQ-käyrä. Kun taas väännetään ISF:ää täysin auki ollaan keskellä brittiläistä meininkiä, jossa basso ja tuntuma ovat hieman löysempi ja keskialue on selvästi täyteläisempi ja lämpimämpi.
Kun tähän lisätään vielä Overdrive-kanavan Voice-kytkin, jolla pystyy valitsemaan Marshall-tyylisen Classic Overdriven sekä Rectifier-tyylisen Modern Overdriven välillä, on selvää, että Blackstar HT Club 50:n soundivaihtoehdot ovat lähes rajattomat.

Mielestäni Blackstarin HT Club 50/HTV-412A-yhdistelmä edustaa tämän hetken puolistäkkien aatelistoa, edullisesta hinnastaan huolimatta. On hyvin harvinaista, että vahvistimesta saa heti kättelyssä irti maukkaat puhtaat ja särösoundit, taajuuskorjaimiin koskematta. Blackstarin HT Club 50 on juuri sellainen harvinainen tapaus, jossa EQ:ta voi todellakin käyttää vain soundien hienosäätämiseen, eikä soundillisien epäkohtien korjailuun.
Kyllä, vanha kettu huomaa HT Venue -sarjan ja Series One -vahvistimien väliset pienet erot, mutta HT Club 50 -nupiin on silti mahdutettu mukaan koko Blackstar-maailma ilman häiritseviä kompromisseja.
Monipuolisuutensa ansiosta HT Club 50 on miltei mahdoton lokeroida, ja näin rajoittaa ainoastaan tiettyyn genreen sopivaksi. Puolistäkki on loistava valinta, kun tarvitaan monipuolista soundia järkevällä teholla myös hiukan isompia keikkoja varten.
