Näin Halla Customin Hallabird-kitaran ensi kertaa vuoden alussa pidetyssä Tonefestissä, jossa se oli esillä soitinrakentaja-artesaani Ville Mattilan ständillä samantyylisen basson kanssa.
Siitä bassosta koko Hallabird-ajatus lähti alun perin liikkeelle. Ville oli rakentanut omaan käyttöönsä Gibson Thunderbirdiltä vaikutteita saaneen sähköbasson. Ville sai keikoilla niin paljon myönteistä palautetta uudesta bassostaan, että hän päätti tehdä samoilla designperiaatteilla myös sähkökitaran.

Halla Customin Hallabird (3,700 €; mm. kova laukku kuluu hintaan) on käsintehty kaula-läpi-rungon kitara täydellisellä natural-viimeistelyllä.
Kitaran kaula on kasattu yhdeksästä vierekkäisestä puurimasta, jossa afrikkalainen mahonki (khaya ivorensis) ja pähkinäpuu vuorottelevat. Kaulan perusrakenne on siis hyvin Gibson-tyylinen, mutta mensuurin suhteen Hallabird lähtee omille teilleen. Tässä custom-kitarassa on nimittäin erikoispitkä mensuuri (kielten soivan osan pituus), joka on 67 senttimetreillä kaksi senttiä Strato-mesuuria pidempi.
Kitaran tyylikäs ja solakka runko muodostuu kahdesta khaya-palasta.
Hallabird-mallin mustat metalliosat tulevat Gotohilta. Soittimen messinkisatula lisää avoimien kielten soittoon hieman diskanttia. En ole tähän mennessä koskaan kohdannut näin sulavasti muotoiltua messinkisatulaa.
Kaksisuuntaista kaularautaa pääsee säätämään tässä Halla Custom -kitarassa viritinlavalta.
Hallabirdin eebenpuiseen otelautaan on asennettu 24 kiiltävää Jescar Evo jumbonauhaa. Nauhatyön laatu on esimerkillinen. Tällaista laatua on miltei mahdotonta löytää edes kalliimmissa tuotantolinjan soittimissa.
Virittimien tavoin myös Hallabirdin tune-o-matic-talla ja palkkimainen kieltenpidin ovat laadukkaita Gotoh-osia.
Ville Mattila käyttää monissa Halla Custom -malleissa oman pajan mikrofoneja. Hallabirdistä löytyy kaksi P-90-tyylistä mikkiä, jotka on sovitettu taitavasti EMG-tyylisiin muovikuoriin. Yhteiskäytössä mikit toimivat humbuckerin tavoin. Mikrofonien kultaiset naparuuvit ovat hieno yksityiskohta, joka sopii hyvin yhteen mallin Jescar EVO -nauhojen ja afrikkalaisen mahongin kanssa.
Hallabirdin säätimissä piilee vielä yksi mielenkiintoinen yksityiskohta. Kitaran kolmiasentoinen vipukytkin ja myös sen mastervolume (ilman treble-bleediä) toimivat odotetusti, mutta toisen mustan nupin alta paljastuukin kolmiasentoinen kiertokytkin. Ville kutsuu tätä kytkintä impedanssikytkimeksi, joka vaikuttaa sekä kitarasignaalin diskanttipitoisuuteen että volume-säätimen käyttäytymiseen. Impedanssikytkimellä pystyy siis hienovirittämään volume-säätimen tuntumaa omaan musiikkigenreen ja vahvistimeen sopivaksi.

Halla Customin Hallabird on helvetinmoinen kitara. Ville Mattila on onnistunut luomaan sellaisen soittimen, joka näyttää samalla tutulta ja tuoreelta. Kitara on samanaikaisesti hillitty ja huomiota herättävä tapaus. Työnjälki on ensiluokkaista pienintä yksityiskohtaa myöten.
Pitkiä sessiot tai keikat eivät tunnu missään, koska Hallabird on niin kevyt. Non-reverse rungon ansiosta Hallabirdin tasapaino hihnassa on myös hyvin mukava, erikoispitkästä kaulasta huolimatta.
Kaulaprofiili on mukavan lihaksikas ja pyöreä, ilman että se tuntuisi kömpelöltä. Erinomaisen nauhatyön ja loistavan trimmin ansiosta kitaran kymppisetti tuntuu erittäin nopealta ja kevyeltä. Veikkaisin, että tällaisella setupilla monet soittajat eivät edes huomaisi testikitaran pidempää mensuuria. Asiakas pystyy kuitenkin tilaamaan oman unelmakitaransa omien speksien mukaan.
Hallabirdissä on tarkka, pianomainen atakki, sekä pitkä ja tasainen sustain. Kielten välinen erottelevuus on ensiluokkainen, jopa hyvin tiheitä sointuja soitettaessa. Soundissa on erinomainen balanssi lämmön ja avoimuuden välillä.
P-90-tyyliset mikrofonit ovat oiva valinta, jos hakusessa on humbuckerin soundillinen leveys ja voima yhdistettyinä yksikelaisen mikin dynamiikkaan. Vaikka sen ulkonäkö on melko ”rock”, pystyy Hallabirdillä kuitenkin liikkumaan ongelmitta myös kantrimusiikin tai Jazzin piireissä.

Halla Customin Hallabird on hyvin kaunis ja erittäin hyvin soiva käsintehty sähkökitara, joka on suomalaisen kitararakennuksen huipputason loistokas hedelmä. Hallabirdin Rock-asenteen takana löytyy hyvin monipuolinen soitin vaativalle soittajalle.
Luonnollisesti, tällaisella huippulaadulla on aina myös hintansa. Mutta vastineeksi saa tässä aidon boutique-luokan soittimen, jonka takana seisoo osaava ja omistautunut käsityöläinen.

I first saw the Halla Custom Hallabird at this year’s Tonefest, where luthier-artisan Ville Mattila displayed it alongside its bass brother.
It was actually the bass that served as the original impetus for the Hallabird. Ville had made a slightly Gibson Thunderbird-influenced bass for his own use. The bass got so much positive attention that Ville decided to put more bread on the water, which is why he developed a guitar model along the same design ideas.

The Halla Custom Hallabird (3,700 €; including case and more, see below) is a handmade neck-through guitar with a flawless clear finish.
The through neck is made from nine long strips of wood – African mahogany (khaya ivorensis) offset with walnut. While the neck construction follows Gibson’s lead, the Hallabird takes its own path when it comes to scale length. This custom guitar comes with an extra long scale length of 67 cm (that’s approximately 26.37 inches for our Imperial readers).
The streamlined body wings have been crafted from khaya, too.
The Hallabird comes equipped with black Gotoh-hardware. This guitar also sports a brass nut to insert a little brightness into the open strings. This is probably the smoothest brass nut I’ve seen in my guitar-playing life.
Access to the two-way truss rod is from the headstock end on this Halla Custom guitar.
Twenty-four gleaming Jescar Evo jumbo frets have been installed into the Hallabird’s ebony fingerboard. The fretwork is nothing short of excellent – this is one of the areas where a handcrafted guitar tends to outshine production models, regardless of their price.
Gotoh’s hardware is known for its consistently high quality, and the Hallabird’s TOM-bridge and stopbar are no exception.
Ville Mattila mostly uses his own pickups in his Halla Custom guitars. The Hallabird comes equipped with a pair of handmade P-90s, niftily placed inside EMG-style plastic covers. The pickups are reverse-wound/reverse-polarity, meaning they act as a humbucker, when used together. The pickups’ golden polepieces look great with the Jescar EVOs and the khaya mahogany.
The Hallabird’s electronics are a little bit different than what you’d expect, judging by the knobs. There’s a three-way toggle for pickup selection, as well as a master volume control (sans treble bleed). What looks like a tone control is in fact what Ville calls a three-way impedance rotary. While the rotary switch minutely changes the treble content of the overall signal, it clearly influences the volume control’s roll-off taper. This allows you to fine-tune the way the guitar’s volume control reacts to your playing style and your amplifier.

Halla Custom’s Hallabird is one heck of a guitar. It is one of these rare cases, where a new design manages to look classic and fresh at the same time. A guitar that is understated, yet flashy. The quality of workmanship is excellent down to the smallest details.
The Hallabird is very lightweight, making it an ideal choice for long sessions or gigs. Thanks to the guitar being a non-reverse design, the Hallabird balances very nicely despite its longer-than-usual neck.
The neck profile is reassuringly round and chunky, without feeling clunky or unwieldy. Thanks to the outstanding fretwork the Hallabird came with a setup that made a set of 010s feel very slinky, even on the extra long scale neck. I’m quite sure many players won’t even notice the extra scale length, but if you wanted to order something more ordinary, I’m sure that Ville would happily oblige.
Acoustically, the Hallabird displays a piano-like attack with a long and even sustain. Note separation is excellent, even with complex chords, and there’s a great balance between warmth and clarity.
P-90s are a fantastic choice if you need humbucker-type power and girth, coupled to a single-coil’s dynamics. Even though its looks are probably a little ”too Rock”, the Hallabird can glide effortlessly into Country and Jazz mode, and then turn into a Rock machine at the proverbial drop of a hat.

Dream Theater’s guitar wizard John Petrucci has a long and very fruitful association with Music Man. Over the years, the company has released several signature models, both US-made and as part of their less-expensive Sterling brand.
Last year Ernie Ball/Music Man have released a new top-of-the-line John Petrucci signature instrument – the Music Man Majesty (Majesty was the original name of the Progressive Rock band that became Dream Theater).

The first thing that will strike you about the new package is the sensationally low weight:
When I went to pick up the Music Man Majesty for this review (from DLX Music Helsinki), I had to open the case and check, because I suspected the guitar was missing. No, it really was in there…
Music Man’s Majesty (current price in Finland approx. 3,900 €) is a modern top-drawer signature model, which conveys the artist’s clear vision of what his dream guitar should be like. This isn’t simply a souped-up classic model – Petrucci and Music Man started with a clean slate.
Music Man’s new signature model is a Neck-Through design with a two-octave mahogany neck, and a very smooth neck joint at the 23rd fret.
The Majesty’s body, too, is highly sculpted – you could call it streamlined – and it fits the player’s body perfectly.
The body wings, made from basswood, are capped by a maple top. The area on the top, which forms a sort of shield or crest, may look like graphite weave at first glance. In reality, this is a translucent area of the maple top, and what you see is a laser-etched graphic design resembling the look of carbon composite.
The review guitar’s finish is called Arctic Dream, which is a matte finish changing from violet to a dark green hue, depending on how the light hits the body.
Music Man’s classic four-and-two headstock sports a set of locking Schaller M6-tuners.
Below the compensated – and self-lubricating nut – you can see the metallic Dream Theater-logo inlay.
The quality of the fretwork on the Majesty is outstanding. We can find 24 jumbo-sized, stainless-steel frets installed into the ebony fingerboard.
The shield inlays are in fact tiny mirrors.
The floating vibrato bridge is Music Man’s own, cool design, which features steel saddles equipped with Fishman piezo elements for acoustic-style tones.
The Majesty’s magnetic side comprises a pair of DiMarzio Illuminator humbuckers (John Petrucci’s signature pickups), installed straight into the body wood.
Music Man’s Majesty comes with a very dedicated, special switching system; the technically-minded among you can take a look at the schematics:
The three-way switch in the top horn lets the player select between piezo-only, magnetic-only, and piezo-plus-magnetic settings.
Beneath the strings you will find a second three-position toggle switch, that works as a pickup selector for the DiMarzios.
The control next to it is the volume control for the humbuckers. It also contains a push-push switch for engaging the Majesty’s active signal boost.
The second knob is a passive tone control, whose push-push switch works in the pickup selector’s middle position. ”Down” gives you the full sonic attack of two humbuckers, while the ”up” position switches off the outer coils of both pickups for thinner, more Fender-style sounds.
The third switch (near the output jack) is the volume control for the piezo signal. This knob sports a momentary switch, which allows you to reconfigure the output from standard mono – both the piezo and magnetic signals are sent to the same amplifier – to ”stereo”, enabling you to use a Y-cable to send the piezo’s output to a dedicated acoustic amp (or to a mixing console).
By using a tiny screwdriver you can adjust the active signal booster for the humbuckers, as well as set the maximum volume of the piezo signal, and the Fishman two-band EQ.
The Majesty’s active electronics are powered by a 9 V block.

Some ”signature models” are only for posing. Others are simply souped-up, or slightly tweaked, versions of classic guitar models.
Music Man’s Majesty is one of the few instances, when a guitar hero had very clear and strong views regarding the look, the features, and the sounds of his dream guitar. Petrucci and Music Man set to work, and no compromises were accepted.
The Majesty is a fantastic instrument, and each guitar leaves the factory set up to Mr Petrucci’s exacting specifications. You get the exact guitar the master himself plays on stage and in the studio.
As already mentioned, this guitar is extremely light and comfortable, and balances perfectly on a guitar strap.
The neck profile is a relatively thin D. The satin-finished neck feels very fast and friendly, without being insubstantial.
Thanks to the jumbo frets and the flat fingerboard radius (17″) the Majesty is very bend-friendly. The action is low, but completely free of fret buzz (low-E: 1.7 mm/high-e: 1.6 mm).
The Majesty’s floating vibrato works very smoothly, and has excellent return-to-pitch.
The piezo system works great! It gives you a credible ”acoustic” tone in the context of a Rock or Metal band, and also comes in handy to ”freshen up” the Majesty’s magnetic signal (the clip has the following order: piezo –> piezo + coil split –> coil split):
Here’s an example of the clean magnetic tones you can get from this Music Man. The powerful DiMarzio Illuminators are loaded with ceramic magnets (neck PU –> both (full) –> both (coil split) –> bridge PU):
The Majesty’s coil split and active boost give you three different degrees of distortion without even stepping on a single pedal. This clip has the coil split first, followed by the full middle position:

The Music Man John Petrucci Majesty is a top-grade signature guitar with an extremely wide array of sounds. Music Man Majestyn (hintaluokka noin 3.900 €) tapauksessa kyseessä on todellakin huippumoderni nimikkomalli, jolla on selvästi ihan omat näkemyksensä siitä, millainen nykyaikaisen sähkökitaran pitäisi olla. Majestyn suunnittelu lähti liikkeelle lähes tyhjältä pöydältä.
Music Manin uutuusmallissa mahonkikaula jatkuu yhtenäisenä läpi koko rungon (ns. Through-Neck), mikä mahdollistaa erittäin sulavan kaulan ja rungon liitoksen 23. nauhan kohdalla.
Myös Majestyn runko on veistetty erittäin sulavaksi, minkä ansiosta se myötäilee täydellisesti soittajan kehoa.
Runko on tehty kahdesta lehmussiivestä, joiden päälle on liimattu suhteellisen ohut vaahterakansi. Kilpeä (tai vaakunaa) muistuttava, tumma keskiosa näyttää ensisilmäykseltä hiilikuidulta, mutta todellisuudessa vaahteran pintaan on poltettu laserilla grafiittia muistuttava kuvio.
Testikitaran viimeistelyn nimi on Arctic Dream, ja sen väri vaihtelee katselukulmasta riippuen syvästä violetista tumman vihreään.

Yläsarvessa on kolmiasentoinen kytkin, jolla valitaan käytetäänkö ainoastaan piezopuolta, magneettimikrofoneja vai molempia yhdessä.
Kielten alapuolelta löytyy perinteinen kolmiasentoinen mikkikytkin DiMarzio-humbuckereille.
Ensimmäinen säädin on humbuckerien volume. Tähän potikkaan on piilotettu myös push-push-nostokytkin, jolla voi ottaa käyttöön Majestyn aktiivisen signaaliboosterin.
Toinen säädin on passiivinen tone-nuppi. Tässäkin säätimessä on push-push-kytkin, jolla kytketään mikkien uloimmat kelat pois päältä, silloin kun mikkivalitsin on keskiasennossa. Näin saadaan Music Manilta myös ohuempia, Fender-tyylisiä soundeja.
Jakkilähdön lähellä oleva, kolmas säädin on piezo-puolen volume. Tässä säätimessä on painokytkin, jolla voi valita, käytetäänkö kitaran lähtöä monona – jolloin sekä piezo- että magneettiset mikrofonit menevät samaan vahvistimeen – tai stereona (Y-johdolla), jolloin piezosignaalin voi kytkeä akustiseen vahvistimeen tai suoraan mikseriin.
Elektroniikkalokeron kannen läpi voi säätää pikkuruuvarilla booster-toiminnon ja piezosignaalin tasoja, sekä Fishmanin kaksikaistaista EQ:ta piezopuolelle.
Majesty-malli saa tarvitseman virtansa yhdestä 9 voltin paristosta.

Joidenkin artistien ”nimikkomallit” ovat pelkästään mainoskuvia varten. Toiset nimikkomallit taas ovat kevyesti muunneltuja versioita jostain tietystä klassikkokitarasta.
Music Man Majesty sen sijaan on yksi niistä harvinaisista tapauksista, jossa kitarasankarilla oli erittäin selkeät näkemykset soittimen ulkonäön, ominaisuuksien, sekä soundien kannoilta, joita on sitten lähetty toteuttamaan ilman turhia kompromisseja.
Majesty on huippusoitin, ja jokainen yksilö lähtee Music Manin tehtaalta prikulleen samoilla säädöillä, joita John Petrucci itse käyttää.
Kuten jo mainittu, tämä kitara on ultrakevyt, ja se roikkuu hihnassa täydellisessä tasapainossa.
Satiinipintaisen kaulan profiili on suhteellisen ohut D. Se on siis melko nopealta ja mukavalta tuntuva tapaus, joka ei kuitenkaan ole vielä epämiellyttävän ohut.
Jumbo-kokoisten nauhojen ja loivan otelautaradiuksen (17 tuumaa) ansiosta kielten venytykset onnistuvat vaivattomasti.
Kieltenkorkeudetkin on säädetty melko matalaksi (matala E: 1,7 mm/korkea e: 1,6 mm), mutta kitara soi silti puhtaasti ja rämisemättä.
Majestyn kelluva vibra toimii mukavan sulavasti ja ilman vireongelmia.
Majestyn piezosignaali kuulostaa todella hyvältä. Se toimii hyvin akustisen kitaran sijaisena Rock-bändin kontekstissa, tai sitten magneettisen soinnin raikastajana (järjestys: piezo –> piezo + coil split –> coil split):
Tältä kuulostavat Music Manin puhtaat magneettiset soundit. Tehokkaissa DiMarzion Illuminator-humbuckereissa on keraamiset magneetit (järjestys: kaulamikki –> molemmat (täysillä) –> molemmat (coil split) –> tallamikrofoni):

Music Man Majesty on erittäin laadukas ja todella monipuolinen nimikkosoitin. Laadukkaan toteutuksen lisäksi parasta tässä soittimessa kuitenkin on, että Majestyn kattavat ominaisuudet ja laaja sounditarjonta sopivat – John Petruccin ohella – varmasti myös monelle muulle kitaristille.

Music Man John Petrucci Majesty

American guitar guru Grover Jackson is a genuine living legend. When Jackson bought Wayne Charvel’s small shop (in 1978) nobody would have guessed that this man would single-handedly define two new types of electric guitars.
The – mostly bolt-on necked – Charvel guitars from the Eighties kicked off the Superstrat-phenomenon in earnest.
The original Jackson-branded instruments became famous as hiogh-octane Metal-guitars, which combined first class playability with bold graphic finishes. The most legendary Jacks model is surely the Concorde/RR, which Grover Jackson developed for Randy Rhoads.
Grover Jackson left Charvel/Jackson at the end of the 80s, and he went on to design instruments for a number of different brands, like Washburn for example. The Charvel and Jackson brands are nowadays part of the huge Fender conglomerate.
Grover Jackson has recently launched a new guitar-making outfit, together with (ex-Fender man) Jon Gold. GJ2 Guitars is a small Californian outfit which concentrates on small-run high-end guitar making.

The GJ2 Glendora NLT (this version 1,717 €, incl. gigbag) is the most traditional guitar of our group of five.
The review sample’s body has been crafted from light ash (custom option) and finished in gloss Antique White. The basic version of the Glendora comes with a body made from either basswood, alder or poplar.
The satin-finished maple neck joins the body in traditional fashion.
The Glendora’s headstock is a stylish variation on the classic six-in-a-row design.
The tuning machines are quality units from Gotoh.
The contemporary two-post vibrato bridge is also a Gotoh design. The bar is simply pushed into the block and kept in place by an adjustable nylon collar.
The rosewood fingerboad sports 22 gleaming jumbo-sized frets.
For his new GJ2 guitars Grover Jackson has perfected a new method of applying a compound radius to the fretboard. A compund radius means that the frets have a steeper curve near the nut and get shallower further up towards the body. This gives you the best of both worlds with easy open position chording and effortless string bending higher up the neck without string choking.
GJ2 Guitars use their own Habanero pickups as standard. Our review sample comes equipped with an HSS-setup, but you can order your Glendora with several different pickup combinations, like the vintage-style SSS or two humbuckers.
The controls comprise a five-way switch, as well as master volume and tone controls.

The Glendora FR (this version 1,930 €, incl. lightweight case) is the Floyd Rose-equipped version of the Glendora.
Our review instrument comes with a standard body (basswood, alder or poplar), but apart from that the basic build is the same as on the Glendora NLT.
One of the custom options available for a surcharge in the Glendora-range is a matching headcap, just like on this guitar.
GJ2 Guitars use only top-drawer quality parts, like the Schaller-made steel Floyd Rose bridge on the Glendora FR.
It’s a Habanero-set of two single-coils and one humbucker for this guitar.

The GJ2 Arete is one of Grover Jackson’s new designs based on a through-neck. There are three different basic versions of the Arete available, called 3-Star, 4-Star and 5-Star.
The Arete 4-Star (this version 2,231 €, incl. lightweight case) is the middle model, which is crafted almost completely from South-American mahogany. The neck uses three long strips side-by-side for added stiffness.
Two mahogany wings make up the streamlined body. The more affordable Arete 3-Star is made from sapele, while the more expensive 5-Star counterpart gives you several different body woods to choose from.
The Arete 4-Star comes in a hand-rubbed oil finish. The cover plates are made from aluminium.
The headstock sports one of GJ2 Guitars’ special features – the Invisible Binding. This is achieved by routing out a shallow ”pool” on the headstock’s face, into which a large rosewood plate is then inlaid.
All Arete 4-Star guitars are vibrato-equipped – they come either with the same knife-edge bridge as on the Glendora NTL, or with a steel Floyd Rose as on our review instrument.
The black pickup bezels feature a structured surface.
The bound rosewood fingerboard sports Mini Bull’s Eye inlays, as well as 22 jumbo frets.
The basic version of the Arete 4-Star is equipped with two Habanero humbuckers, but you can also order HSS- or HSH-configurations, should you so desire.
The three-way toggle is mounted between the master volume and tone controls. GJ2 Guitars’ cool Flying Saucer-knobs not only look great, but are also easy to adjust.

A through-neck crafted from three side-by-side strips of maple flanked by basswood wings – this is the basic recipe behind the GJ2 Concorde 4-Star (this version 2,768 €, including hard case).
All Concorde-models feature a full-length, 64.8 cm (25.5-inch) scale.
The Concorde 4-Star is available in five gloss finishes – Jet Black, Stark White, Antique White, Sports Car Red and GJ Blue – and either a Floyd Rose vibrato (as on the review sample) or a Gotoh hardtail bridge.
The hardware on a Concorde 4-Star is chrome-plated.
The fretboard is equipped with 22 jumbo frets and pearloid inlays.
The volume knob is easy to reach with your pinkie.
Two Hanbanero humbuckers, one master volume, one master tone control and a three-way toggle – what more does a Rock God need?
The placement of the output jack is a nifty little feature.

Ebony is the material of choice for the bound fretboard, as well as the headstock inlay.

The feather-light ash-bodied GJ2 Glendora NLT is a fantastic S-style guitar for the connoisseur!
The Glendora’s playability is first-rate, and the guitar’s satin-finished neck, with its oval C-profile feels like an old friend.
Played acoustically there’s a hefty dose of woody dryness and sparkling top end, no doubt thanks to the ash body. The Glendora NLT’s displays an open voice with a nicely clucking attack.
I have only good things to say about GJ2’s Habanero pickups – they sound great, they are dynamically rich and the whole set is well balanced in terms of tone and output level.

The workmanship, feel and playability of the Glendora FR is the same as in the NLT-version – simply fantastic!
Acoustically there’s maybe a tad more roundness in the mid-range and a slightly fatter bass on display in the Glendora FR, which is probably a result of its standard body. On the other hand, the steel Floyd Rose adds its own sprinkling of presence bite into the mix.
Because the bridge humbucker isn’t overpowering the guitar’s single-coils, there’s plenty of fun to be had using the second switch position (bridge and middle):
The lightweight GJ2 Arete 4-Star is a very comfortable guitar to hold and play.
Thanks to its hand-rubbed oil finish the Arete feels very organic. If you’re a fan of nice wood, then this is the guitar for you.
The neck profile has a nice bit of shoulders to its slightly flattened D-section, and fills out your hand rather nicely.
The Arete’s acoustic voice is warm and open.
GJ2’s Habanera humbuckers clearly follow the boutique-vintage route, which puts tone and dynamics front and centre, instead of sheer brute force. Thanks to this it is very easy to coax a whole trainload of different tasty humbucker-tones from the Arete 4-Star, which will satisfy both the traditionalist, as well as modern Rock- and Fusion-guitarists.
The Flying Saucer knobs have a very positive grip, allowing you to adjust the guitar’s controls precisely.

It may come as a surprise to a newbie, but the Concorde 4-Star actually feels extremely comfortable hanging suspended from a guitar strap. Sure, the visuals are very angular, but the feel isn’t.
On the other hand I should stress that the Concorde most probably isn’t the right choice as a couch guitar, because it won’t really stay in your lap. And one more thing – beware of the sharp top horn! But as long as you know this guitar’s boundaries, your in for a fun ride with a light and well-balanced studio- and stage-guitar.
The neck has a chunky D-profile, which is good news for tone and sustain.
The Concorde’s long scale, its maple through-neck, as well as the Floyd Rose system give this guitar a clearer, more precise – and in a positive way – more neutral acoustic tone, when compared, say, to a Gibson Flying V.
The guitar’s Habanero humbuckers do a fantastic job in getting the Concorde 4-Star’s precise attack and growling mid-range across.
The neck ’bucker displays a fluid, flute-like timbre, without any sign of muddiness:
In terms of playablity and ergonomics there’s not much to divide the Concorden 5-Star from its 4-Star sibling.
But there are some clear differences in tone, most probably due to the posher 5-Star-version’s ebony ’board. The Concorde 5-Star has some added presence bite and a tad more twang in its attack, resulting in an even livelier tone.

What a great thing that Grover Jackson isn’t content with resting on his (considerable) laurels. These new instruments build upon Mr Jackson’s rich past and vast knowledge, while managing to stay foward-facing and fresh.
The sum of this knowledge and experience, coupled with new building techniques and GJ2 Guitars’ obvious attention to detail, result in a range of instruments I would call the best guitars Grover Jackson has ever made.
This type of quality naturally comes at a price. But in light of GJ2’s comparatively small production runs and the sheer quality on offer here, you truly get what you paid for – boutique quality, made in the USA.
Amerikkalainen kitaraguru Grover Jackson on aito elävä legenda. Kun Jackson osti Wayne Charvelin pikkupajan (vuonna 1978), kukaan ei olisi uskonut, että miehen soittimet tulisivat luomaan vankan perustan heti kahdelle uudelle soitintyypille.
Usein ruuvikaulalla varustetut Charvel-soittimet olivat 1980-luvun Superstrato-ilmiön alkulähde.
Jackson-nimellä varustetut kitarat taas olivat korkeaoktaanisia Metal-kitaroita, joissa erinomainen soitettavuus meni usein käsi kädessä rohkean graafisen viimeistelyn kanssa. Legendaarisin Jackson on ehkä Randy Rhoadsin kanssa kehitelty Concorde/RR-malli.
Grover Jackson lähti 80-uvun loppupuolella uusiin haasteisiin ja suunnitteli kitaroita esimerkiksi Washburnille. Charvel- ja Jackson-brändit kuuluvat nykyään Fender-konsernille.
Nyt mies on palannut omille juurilleen: Grover Jackson on hiljattain perustanut uuden custompajan nimeltä GJ2 Guitars, joka keskittyy pienimuotoiseen sarjatuotantoon Kaliforniassa.

Painossa, työnjäljessä tai soitettavuudessa en löytänyt minkäänlaista eroa Glendora-mallien välillä – yksi sana riittää kuvailuun: loistava!
Akustisessa soinnissa on Glendora FR:ssa havaittavissa tietynlaista, varmasti perusrungosta johtuvaa keskialueen pyöreyttä, sekä aavistuksen verran muhkeampi basso. Toisaalta teräs-Floikka lisää sekoitukseen vielä oman ripauksen preesensalueen tuoreutta.
Koska tallamikrofoni ei ole liian tehokas yksikelaisten suhteen, keskimikrofonin ja tallahumbuckerin yhteiseltä soundilta löytyy hyvin viehättäviä vivahteita:
Sulavarunkoinen ja kevyt Arete 4-Star on erittäin mukava soittaa sekä sylissä että hihnassa.
Öljyviimeistelyn ansiosta kitara tuntuu hyvin orgaaniselta. Tämä on kitara kauniin puun ystäville.
Kaulaprofiiliksi on valittu positiivisella tavalla harteikas ja hieman laakea D-poikkileikkaus, joka tuntuu mukavan tilaavalta otekädessä.
Areten akustinen soundi on lämmin ja avoin.
GJ2:n Habanera-humbuckerit edustavat selvästi boutique-vintage-osastoa, jossa hyvä soundi ja laaja dynamiikka menevät raa’an voiman edelle. Tämän ansiosta tarjoaa Arete 4-Star laajan valikoiman humbuckersoundeja, jotka sopivat sekä perinnetietoiselle että uudemman musiikin ystäville.
Firman UFO-nupit näyttävät ehkä hieman hassuilta, mutta ne ovat mielestäni käytössä erittäin käyttäjäystävällisiä ja tarkkoja.

Ensikertalaiselle voi tulla yllätyksenä kuinka mukavasti Concorde 4-Star tuntuu soittimena hihnassa. Vaikka kitara näyttää kulmikkaalta, se ei tunnu siltä.
On kuitenkin myös totta, että Concorde ei ole ehkä luontevin valinta sohvakitaraksi, koska se ei oikein istu sylissä. Ja lavashowssa täyttyy varoa rungon yläkärjen terävyyttä. Mutta kun tietää nämä käyttörajoitteet, jää käteen kuitenkin erinomainen, kevyt ja hyvässä tasapainossa oleva live- ja studiokitara.
Täyteläinen D-profiili antaa otekädelle reilusti tukea ja soittimelle reilusti sustainea.
Concorden pitkä mensuuri, sen rungon läpi jatkuva vaahterakaula, sekä kitaran lukittava vibrasysteemi antavat tälle soittimelle selvästi täsmällisemmän – ja positiivisella tavalla neutraalimman – akustisen soinnin, jos vertaa esimerkiksi Gibson Flying V:hen.
Tällä alustalla loistavat Habanero-mikit onnistuvat täysin välittämään eteenpäin Concorden täsmällistä atakkia ja mureaa keskialuetta.
Kaulamikrofonista kuulee huilumaisia vivahteita, ilman minkäänlaista soundin puuroutumista:
Ergonomialtaan ja soitettavuudeltaan Concorden 5-Star-painos on miltei samanlainen kuin 4-Star-vaihtoehto.
Soundeissa löytyy kuitenkin selviä eroja, jotka johtuvat hyvin todennäköisesti kalliimman 5-Star-mallin eebenpuisesta otelaudasta. Tässä Concordessa löytyy vielä enemmän purevuutta preesensalueella ja lisäannos twängia atakissa, lisätuloksena syntyy vielä eloisampi sointi.

On ihan selvää, ettei Grover Jackson jaksa levätä vanhoilla laakereillaan. Uusi mallisto on syntynyt miehen pitkästä kokemuksesta sähkökitara-alalla, mutta Jacksonin katse kohdistuu eteenpäin, eikä taakse.
Uudet rakennusmenetelmät ja malliston monet detaljiparannukset ovat kokemuksen lisäksi tärkeä syy siihen, miksi GJ2 Guitarsin uudet kitarat ovat mielestäni parasta, mitä Grover Jackson on ikinä luonut.
Tällaisella laadulla on tietenkin hintansa, mutta pidän GJ2-kitaroiden hintoja pienen firman tuotantokapasiteettiin – ja tietysti kitaroiden ylivoimaiseen laatuun – nähden reiluna. GJ2 Guitars edustaa putiikkilaatua parhaimmillaan.
ESP Guitars offer plenty of different guitar models for the modern Wunder-widdler. The most classic of these is probably the Horizon – a typical Superstr*t featuring two humbuckers and a Floyd Rose -bridge.

The LTD MH-330FR (current price in Finland:489 €) is a sleek and stylish piece of work, with the Electric Blue finish adding its own bit of panache.
The same cool finish is also applied to the maple neck and the back of the mahogany body.
All of the MH-330FR’s hardware comes in black nickel, which shines in a smoky, dark-greyish way.
The capsuled Gotoh-style tuners are of decent quality. A volute strengthens the area underneath the top nut to prevent breakages.
A beautiful piece of rosewood has been chosen for the LTD’s bound fretboard, which sports stylish inlays, as well as 24 nicely finished jumbo-sized frets.
The chamfered neck joint makes reaching the dusty end more comfortable, compared to a standard old-school bolt-on joint.
The MH-330FR’s active ESP-pickups look rather similar to EMG-units.
The controls comprise a master volume and a master tone, with a three-way blade switch for pickup selection.
A nice touch: The battery compartment lid is fastened with machine screws, which grip into metal inlets. This is a much better way of doing this than using plain wood screws.
The clean workmanship is carried over into the electronics cavity also, with graphite paint and aluminium foil taking care of shielding against interference.
The LTD’n Floyd Rose Special –vibrato is a decent-quality, less expensive licensed Floyd Rose, manufactured in South Korea. The most important difference between the Special and the full-blown versions lie in the cast bridge saddles and vibrato block. The Floyd Rose Original is equipped with steel saddles and a brass vibrato block.
Another nifty feature: Two openings in the MH-330FR’s spring cover allow you to adjust spring tension without having to remove the cover!

ESP’s Horizon FR-II (current price in Finland:1.929 €) is a fine example of top-quality, Japanese workmanship. This model is part of the company’s high-quality Standard-range, and it is built with a through-neck.
The body is made up from two mahogany wings on the back, and topped off with a gorgeous flame maple top on its front side.
Depending on the finish, the Horizon FR-II either comes with black nickel hardware, or, as is the case with our Dark Brown Sunburst –finished test sample, with chrome hardware.
The tuners are genuine Gotohs.
The workmanship displayed on the LTD-Horizon was already on a high level, but the ESP-Horizon leaves you in no doubt that it is a pro-quality instrument: The smooth ebony board sports 24 jumbo frets, which have been finished carefully to give you the smoothest ride possible.
A very smooth neck-joint, indeed…
The ESP Horizon FR-II is also available with active EMG-units, but our review guitar is the SD-version, which has a Seymour Duncan ’59-model mounted in the neck position, with a JB-model near the bridge (JB = Jeff Beck).
The master volume is equipped with a nifty, spring-loaded push/push-switch. The up-position splits the Horizon’s humbuckers for singlecoil-type tones.
Outstanding workmanship coupled with quality parts – the mark of a top-class instrument.
Here we’ve got the real deal: A Schaller-made Floyd Rose Original –vibrato with steel saddles and a brass block.
The ESP Horizon comes with its own case.

The specifications read ”Thin U Neck Contour”, and I was a bit worried the neck might feel a little unsubstantial and 1980s-style flat. But I needn’t have worried: The LTD’s neck profile is a slim D, which still gives you plenty of flesh for easy playing and good sustain.
The MH-300FR’s Floyd itself works nicely, although I experienced some annoying trouble with the vibrato bar. I couldn’t get the damn thing to stay attached firmly to the vibrato. In use the threaded collar would work loose, causing the bar to start flapping around instead of staying put. Let’s hope this isn’t an endemic problem, but rather a one-off glitch on the review guitar’s Floyd.
Soundwise the LTD MH-300FR is a typical active electric guitar, with a very open and linear tone. Especially the mid-range stays much cleaner and more transparent than on most passive, humbucker-equipped guitars.
Here are two examples (both starting with the neck humbucker):
The ESP Horizon FR-II is very light and plays like a dream. The neck profile is a tad flatter than that used on the LTD, but still steers well clear of uninspiring flatness.
The fantastic fretwork and flat fingerboard camber result in a fast and extremely smooth playing feel – perfect for large bends.
The Floyd Rose Original is still the number one locking vibrato in my opinion, and it works just as it should on the ESP.
The Horizon FR-II sounds warmer and more organic, when compared to its less expensive LTD-brethren. The sound might be too warm for some Thrash Metal guitarists, but overall its earthy quality seems much more versatile to me.
Splitting the humbuckers gives you three more colours to work with, further broadening the ESP’s palette.
