Testipenkissä: Bluetone Black Prince Reverb – vuoden 2021 päivitetty versio

Testasin Bluetone Black Prince Reverb -komboa ensimmäistä kertaa vuonna 2016 ja tykkäsin siitä kovasti. Paljon on kuitenkin tapahtunut tämän jälkeen, ja tänä vuonna Bluetone on yhdistänyt kaikki Black Princen halutuimmat custom optiot ja laittanut ne uuteen ja parannettuun 2021 -versioon, joka korvaa edeltäjänsä.

Ensimmäiseksi huomataan varmaan kaikki kosmetiset seikat. Vanhalla versiolla oli hyvin siisti ja asiallinen ulkonäkö. Uuden version myötä Bluetone on viennyt suosikkimallinsa ulkonäköä kuitenkin selkeästi Boutique-vahvistimien piiriin – Fender-tyylisessä kombossa on nyt western-tyylinen keinonahkapäällystys, etupaneeli ja säätimien nupit ovat Blackface-tyylisiä, ja vahvistimen etukangas muistuttaa väriltään vehnän oljet.

Ratkaisevat päivitykset on tehty kuitenkin Black Prince Reverbin elektroniseen varustukseen.

Tämän putkikombon sähköinen rakenne perustuu edelleen löyhästi Fenderin klassiseen Blackface Princetoniin – gain-rakenteen, tremolon ja jousikaiun suhteessa – mutta uutena ominaisuutena on lisätty jalkakytkimellä toimiva Solo-boostaus.

Kenties tärkein parannus Black Princen uudessa versiossa on uusi, isompi kaiutin. Vanhassa mallissa oli mukana Princeton-tyylisesti 10 tuuman elementti. Nykyiseen vahvistimeen voi valita yhden kahdesta 12-tuumaisista vaihtoehdoista – joko Celestionin G12 Neo Creamback -kaiutin (niin kuin testikoneessa) tai Warehouse Guitar Speakersin malli G-12 C/S. Isomman kaiuttimen vuoksi nykyversiossa on entistä isompi kotelo, joka on lähellä Blackface Deluxen kokoluokkaa.

Bluetonen Harry Knecktin mukaan myös jousikaiun (ja sen vahvistuspiirin) tarkkaa rakennetta on parannettu entisestä, minkä ansiosta kaiku soi paremmin ja sen omakohina on selkeästi vähennetty. Black Princen lyhyt jousitankki tulee Accutronicsin mallistosta.

Tämän Bluetone-vahvistimen etuvahvistin on rakennettu kolme 12AX7-putkia käyttäen, kun taas päätevahvistin käyttää kaksi putkia.

Päätevahvistin tarjoaa maksimaalista soundillista monipuolisuuta, sillä sen rakenne mahdollistaa käytännössä kaikien oktaaliputkien käyttöä. Päätevahvistimeen voi laitta 6V6GT-, 6L6GC-, 5881-, EL34-, KT66- ja KT77-putkipareja ilman tarvetta biasointiin!

Parilla 6V6GT-putkilla Black Prince Reverb -kombosta lähtee ääntä noin 15 watin voimalla, kun taas kahdesta 6L6GC-putkista (niin kuin testikoneessa) tai EL34:stä vahvistimen teho nousee noin 28-30 wattiin.

Vaikka kombo ei vaadi uudelleenbiasointia, on hyvinkin tärkeä laittaa pääteputkien ja toroidisen muuntajan välistä pikkukytkintä oikeaan asentoon (katso käyttöohjetta), muuten pääteputket (tai jopa sisäiset kompponentit) voivat pahimmassa tapauksessa hajota liian suurten sähkövirtojen takia.

Takapaneelista löytyy kolme kaiutinlähtöä, sekä DIN-mukainen liitin pakettiin kuuluvaa jalkakytkinyksikköä varten.

Näitä klippejä on äänitetty Fender Stratocaster -kitaralla ja Shure SM57 -mikrofonilla.

Ensimmäinen seikka jota huomataan, kun laittaa uuden Bluetone Black Prince Reverb -vahvistimen päälle, on miten hiljaa se on tyhjäkäynnissä. Brummin tai kohinan määrä on pitkälti riippuvainen laadukkaista komponenteista ja osien fyysisesta sijoittelusta, esimerkiksi päämuuntajaan nähden. On selvää, että Bluetonen väki tietää mitä se tekee.

Koska Black Prince ei yritä olla tarkka Princeton-klooni, Bluetonen kombo voi tarjota laajemman soundivalikoiman kuin vanha Fenderin klassikko. Tässä tarjotaan kaikkea mikä on hyvä Blackface-kombojen soundissa, ilman klassikkovahvistimien huonoja puolia, niin kuin esimerkiksi välillä löysästi soivia Jensen-kaiuttimia tai – Princetonin tapauksessa – EQ:sta puuttuvaa keskialuen säädin ja alkuperäinen pieni kaiutin.

Sooloboosteri on erittäin tervetullut uudistus, kun taas Bluetonen Master Volume -säätimen ansiosta saa omat lempisoundit tarvittaessa esille myös hiljaisella volyymillä.

Päätevahvistimen monipuolisuus mahdollistaa myös erilaisia hybridisoundeja, yhdistämällä kombon Fender-tyylisen etuvahvistimen myös britti-tyyliseen päätevahvistimeen (EL34), perinteisten 6V6GT- ja 6L6GC-parivaljakkojen sijaan.

Black Princen tremolo on suorastaan herkullinen, ja se tarjoaariittävästi säätövaraa sekä efektin nopeudessa että sen syvyydessä. Itse tykkään erittäin paljon myös kombon päivitetystä jousikaiusta, koska se kuulostaa kermaiselta ja sillä on aitoa syvyyttä. Jotkut rautalankka-kitaristit voisivat ehkä toivoa vielä enemmän kaiun ”roisketta”, mutta se on selvästi makuasia…

Demobiisin kitararaidat on äänitetty nauhamikrofonilla. Soolokitarana toimii Hamer USA Studio Custom -kitara, kun taas komppiosuudet on soitettu Gibson Les Paul Juniorilla (vasen kanava) ja Fender ’62 Telecaster Custom -uusintapainoksella (oikea kanava).

Bluetonen vuoden 2021 Black Prince Reverb -painos on huippuluokan versio Blackface-aikakauden täysputkikombosta, höystettynä erilaisilla päivityksillä ja nykyaikaisilla parannuksilla. Tästä kombosta on käytännössä mahdotonta saada huonoa soundia.

Niin kuin kaikki Bluetone-tuotteet, myös Black Prince Reverbiä tehdään käsityönä Suomessa. Tästä huolimatta tämä kombo on jopa edullisempi kuin Fenderin oma tämänhetkinen ’64 Princeton -uusintapainos.

Ei ole siis ihme, että Bluetone Black Prince Reverb on ollut jo jonkun aikaa firman eniten myyty vahvistin. Itse asiassa uuden Black Princen soundi oli niin hyvä, että testikombosta tuli – Bluetone Shadows Jr. -kombon lisäksi – Kitarablogin referenssivahvistin.

Review: Bluetone Black Prince Reverb – the 2021 Update

I first reviewed the Bluetone Black Prince Reverb in 2016, and I really liked it. A lot has happened since then, though, and this year Bluetone has bundled all of the most requested custom updates of the Black Prince and put them into a new and improved 2021 version (prices starting from 1,450 €) that supersedes the previous issue.

The first things you’ll notice are the cosmetic features; the old version of the Black Prince Reverb was a very clean looking combo with a very business-like appearance. The new version takes the amp’s look clearly into boutique Blackface territory with its Fender-style cabinet, its Country and Western tolex, its faceplate and control knobs, and with the wheat-coloured speaker grille.

But the improvements go much deeper in the Black Prince than mere cosmetics.

The preamp section’s architecture regarding the combo’s gain structure, spring reverb and tremolo effect are still loosely based on Fender’s classic Blackface Princeton, but Bluetone now adds a footswitch operated Solo-boost circuit to the proceedings.

In terms of the amp’s sound the most important update is the choice of a larger speaker. The older model followed the Princeton by using a 10-inch speaker. The current model has been updated with a choice of two 12-inch speakers – either a Celestion G12 Neo Creamback (as reviewed) or a WGS G-12 C/S. To accommodate the larger speaker the Black Prince Reverb’s cabinet has been enlargened to a size similar to a Fender Blackface Deluxe.

As Bluetone’s Harry Kneckt told me, the Black Prince’s genuine spring reverb’s circuit has been further improved for a fuller sound with even less hiss. The short reverb tank is an Accutronics model.

The Bluetone’s preamp runs three 12AX7 valves, while the power amp is handled by a pair of tubes.

The power amp has been designed with tonal flexibility in mind, by accepting all regular octal power tubes like 6V6GT, 6L6GC, 5881, EL34, KT66 and KT77 models without re-biasing.

With a pair of 6V6GTs the Black Prince Reverb will give you approximately 15 watts of power, while a pair of 6L6GCs (as supplied) or EL34s raises the output to 28-30 watts.

Even though re-biasing isn’t necessary, you have to make sure that the mini-switch between the second power tube and the toroidal transformer is set correctly to ensure the amp works properly, and to avoid possible component failure!

The back panel sports three speaker outputs, as well as the five-pin DIN-connector for the combo’s three-button footswitch unit (supplied with the amp).

In terms of its sound, the first thing you’ll notice about the Bluetone Black Prince Reverb is how quiet it is when it comes to hum and hiss. Unwanted noise in an all-valve amplifier has a lot to do with the physical layout of the components, and Bluetone’s team clearly know what they’re doing.

The Black Prince’s sound offers a wider scope than a straight Princeton-clone (which it isn’t). There’s all of the original Blackface-era goodness without any of the drawbacks, like the sometimes flabby Jensen speakers, and – in the case of old Princetons – the missing mid-range EQ and smaller speaker.

The solo boost is a great new feature, and the Master Volume control makes sure that you can dial in your tone at the volume level you need.

Being able to step outside the typically Fender-ish 6V6GT- and 6L6GC-realm in the power amp section allows you to experiment with hybrid tonalities, like a Blackface with a British accent.

The tremolo sounds great and it offers enough scope in terms of speed and depth. I like the spring reverb very much, because it sounds creamy and full. Some will like even ”wetter” and ”sploshier” reverb types, but you can’t please everyone…

The demo’s guitar tracks have been recorded with a ribbon mic. The lead guitar is a Hamer USA Studio Custom, while the rhythm guitar tracks are played on a Gibson Les Paul Junior (left channel) and a Fender ’62 Telecaster Custom reissue (right).

Bluetone’s 2021 version of its Black Prince Reverb is a high-end version of what people love about Blackface-era amps combined with a number of sensible updates and improvements.

The Bluetone Black Prince Reverb is a handwired and handcrafted all-tube combo, made here in Finland. In light of this you can only call the price tag very fair, coming in several hundreds of euros lower than Fender’s current handwired ’64 Princeton Reissue.

No wonder that the Black Prince has been Bluetone’s best selling model for quite some time now. In fact, I liked the combo so much that the review sample has now joined my Bluetone Shadows Jr. as Kitarablogi’s reference amp.

Review: Bluetone Black Prince Reverb

The Bluetone Black Prince Reverb guitar combo sees the boutique amp makers from Helsinki branch out into a new and interesting direction.

All the Bluetone models we have known thus far have been (and still are) produced as pure and genuine custom-made valve amplifiers.

This means that each new amp is ordered by the customer based on a certain Bluetone configuration on their website – like an à la carte-menu. The chosen model is then tweaked according to the customer’s wishes, and there are plenty of different options available – from the details of the amplifier’s internal specifications all the way to the type of finish of the cabinet and the font on the control panel.

Due to the nature of custom amps, such as these, every Bluetone Custom amp is built completely by hand, starting with a clean slate – meaning: an empty metal chassis, and an empty fibreglass eyelet-board.

The board is then riveted at the right spots to take all the necessary wiring and electronic components going into this specific custom order. Everything is soldered into place by hand (point-to-point).

This is a very involved and time-consuming process, requiring a steady hand and a keen eye, which of course is reflected in the price of a Bluetone Custom amp. The advantage of building this type of point-to-point amp is, of course, that it gives the customer free reign to have his dream amp built.

Bluetone’s dynamic duo – Harry Kneckt and Matti Vauhkonen – have recently decided to launch a second model range alongside their strictly custom-made amps. The new range will include a few models that will be made and sold ”as is”, with only very limited options to choose from.

These new amps will be made using so-called hybrid boards.

Bluetone’s hybrid boards are very sturdy PCBs made of fibreglass, and are of a considerably higher quality than what you’d find in mass-produced valve amplifiers. Each component’s place on the hybrid is clearly labelled, and some of the ”wiring” is already incorporated into the board itself. In contrast to many mass-produced affordable amps, Bluetone’s new range will see all tubes and transformers mounted securely to the metal chassis (like on their custom-made amps, too), and not directly on the PCB (like on many affordable Far Eastern designs).

The rest of the building process is virtually identical to the more costly custom-made amplifiers – the components are fitted to the hybrid board by hand (from the top) and hand-soldered to the board. Thanks to the hybrid board the new amplifier range will be much easier and faster to produce, which will be reflected in the pricing of the new hybrid amps vis-à-vis the point-to-point custom orders.

The first new Bluetone-combo is called the Bluetone Black Prince Reverb (approx. 1.500 €).

This compact and handy combo takes a lot of inspiration from Fender’s legendary ”Blackface” Princeton Reverb (version AA1164), but due to the Bluetone’s many refinements you can’t really call the Black Prince a straight copy.

In addition to the basic version in wine red tolex, you can also order the Black Prince Reverb in genuine tweed, or with an oiled cabinet made from mahogany (both at extra cost).

I very much like the businesslike and sober look of the Blacktone’s front panel. Everything is clearly labelled, which can be a great plus on a dimly lit stage.

The Bluetone Black Prince Reverb offers two different inputs for singlecoil and humbucker-equipped guitars (High and Low). The EQ-section is a three-band affair, with an additional Bright switch to liven up dull sounding pickups.

Even though the Black Prince Reverb is such a compact combo, it still featured both a genuine, valve-driven spring reverb and a tube tremolo.

Bluetone uses a post phase-inverter master volume in most of their designs, because it has the least negative impact on an amp’s tone and feel.

There’s a Fender-style open back on the Black Prince.

The back panel sports outputs for additional speakers, as well as the jack for the combo’s two-button footswitch unit (included).

The Black Prince Reverb combo is an all-valve machine, loaded with the following tube types (from right to left):

The first 12AX7 is the combo’s preamp valve. The spring reverb circuit uses a 12AT7 and a 12AX7 valve. The 12AX7 works as the amp’s phase-inverter and tremolo tube.

The Black Prince leaves Bluetone’s workshop equipped with a pair of 6V6GT power valves, which will translate to about 20 watts of output. You can also re-bias this amp for a pair of 6L6GCs, which would boost the output to almost 30 watts.

This combo’s short reverb tank is supplied by MOD.

Bluetone have chosen a Warehouse Guitar Speakers Retro 10-speaker for their new combo, even though this model is distinctly different from the old Jensen speakers in vintage Fender designs.

This choice is, of course, deliberate and based upon many listening tests:

The WGS Retro, which is made to withstand far more output than this combo can deliver, keeps the Black Prince Reverb’s tones clean and dynamic under all circumstances. This speaker’s British character also makes the Bluetone-combo sound larger and fatter than you’d expect.

Oh, boy, this is a sound you cannot get enough of! At least in my case only a minute or two of playing the Black Prince was enough to make me consider getting myself in debt.

It’s hard to put into words what that special ingredient is, but this is what a clean electric guitar should sound like! This combo sounds clean, fresh and dynamic, but never clinical, cold or brittle. There a good dose of chime, but it doesn’t hurt your ears. The bass strings sound big, but never mushy.

The sound of the short MOD reverb tank is surprisingly dense and complex, and there’s more than enough of it to satisfy Surf Music fans. The Black Prince Reverb’s tremolo works like a treat, too, offering you anything from slow and soft to machine-gun mania.

This combo’s fantastic clean tone is a fantastic platform for pedal addicts. The demo track was recorded using an analogue chorus pedal, a tube screamer-type overdrive, as well as the amp’s built-in reverb and tremolo.

The rhythm parts were played on a Fender Stratocaster, while the lead was played on a Hamer USA Studio Custom:

In my view, Bluetone’s Black Prince Reverb is a top-drawer choice as a combo for use at home or in the studio. It’s also great for smaller gigs, when too much noise on stage can be a problem, or you can mike it up for larger venues.

The Black Prince Reverb is a nicely compact boutique-grade valve combo offering fantastic cleans, as well as fine reverb and tremolo effects.

This amp hasn’t been spoiled by unnecessary ”tube voodoo” or distracting graphic. I’m all for the clean and understated looks this Bluetone has to offer!

This is a handmade, Finnish boutique combo, offered at a very fair price.

Testipenkissä: Bluetone Black Prince Reverb

Bluetone Black Prince Reverb -kitarakombo on uusi aluevaltaus helsinkiläiselle putkivahvistimien valmistajalle.

Tähän mennessä kaikki Bluetone-mallit olivat puhtaasti kokonaan custom-periaatteella rakennettuja pelejä.

Se tarkoittaa, että firman sivustolta löytyy useita valmiita konfiguraatioita – ikään kuin à la carte -ruokalista – joista asiakas valitse hänelle sopivamman kustomoinnin lähtökohdaksi. Ja näitä lisäoptioita löytyy runsaasti – oman vahvistimen tarkoista sisäisistä ominaisuuksista kotelon viimeistelyyn ja säädinpaneelin fonttiin.

Tällainen valinnan runsaus tarkoittaa, että Bluetone custom-vahvistimen teko lähtee aina ns. tyhjästä pöydästä – sopivan kokoisesta metallikotelosta ja tyhjästä lasikuituisesta reikälevystä.

Reikälevystä tehdään ns. eyelet board lisäämällä oikeisiin kohteisiin popniittejä, joihin elektroniikan komponentit ja tarvittavat johdot juotetaan käsin kiinni (= point-to-point-rakenne).

Tämä on hyvin monimutkainen ja aikaa vievä prosessi, mikä näkyy luonnollisesti valmiin tuotteen hinnassa. Point-to-point-tekotapa kuitenkin antaa Bluetonen asiakkaille kustomoinnissa käytännössä vapaat kädet.

Bluetonen johtokaksikko – Harry Kneckt ja Matti Vauhkonen – on hiljattain päättänyt laittaa firman custom-vahvistimien rinnalle uuden sarjan, joka tulee tarjoamaan muutamia ”valmiita” vahvistinmalleja, joille on tarjolla vain hyvin rajattu määrä valittavia lisäoptioita.

Uutuusmalleissa voi virtaviivaistaa kokoonpanoprosessia käyttämällä elektroniikan alustana ns. hybridilevyä.

Bluetonen hybridilevyt ovat lasikuituisia, ja erittäin laadukkaita ja kestäviä, eikä niitä voi verrata massatuotannossa käytettäviin, heppoisiin piirilevyihin. Jokaisen komponentin paikka on tarkoin merkattu, ja monet osien välisistä ”johdotuksista” on hybridilevyssä jo valmiiksi olemassa. Uutuusvahvistimien putket ja muuntimet asennetaan kuitenkin edelleen tukevasti vahvarin metallikoteloon, eikä piirilevylle (niin kuin monissa halpavahvistimissa).

Muu valmistus tapahtuu uusissa malleissa ihan samalla tavalla kuin Bluetonen custom-peleissä – komponentit lisätään käsin (ylhäältä) hybridilevylle ja ne juotetaan käsin paikoilleen. Hybridilevyn ansiosta vahvistin valmistuu vain huomattavasti nopeammin ja helpommin, mikä tullaan näkemään myös hintaerona hybridilevy- ja point-to-point-mallien välillä.

Ensimmäinen hybridilevyä käyttävä Bluetone-kombo on nimeltään Bluetone Black Prince Reverb (1.500 €).

Kätevän kokoisen, yksikanavaisen boutique-kombon inspiraationa on toiminut Fender ”Blackface” Princeton Reverb (versio AA1164), mutta Bluetone-vahvistimessa on niin monta parannusta, ettei Black Princen tapauksessa voi edes puhua kopiosta.

Viininpunaisella tolexilla päällystetyn perusversion lisäksi tarjotaan Black Prince -kombo (lisämaksua vastaan) myös aidolla tweed-kankaalla tai öljytyllä (täyspuisella) mahonkikotelolla.

Tykkään itse kovasti Bluetonen hyvin asiallisen näköisestä etupaneelista, jossa jokainen säädin ja kytkin on selkeästi merkitty. Hektisissä live-tilanteissa selkeä etupaneeli voi olla kullan arvoinen.

Bluetone Black Prince Reverb tarjoaa singlecoil- ja humbucker-kitaroille omat tulojakit (High ja Low). EQ-osasto tarjoaa kolme säädettävää kaistaa, sekä lisäksi Bright-kytkimen, josta saa tarvittaessa vielä enemmän eloisuutta preesensalueelle.

Vaikka kyse on melko kompaktista putkikombosta, löytyy Black Prince Reverbistä sekä aito, putkivahvistettu jousikaiku, että putkitremolo.

Bluetone käyttää vahvistimissaan aina PPIMV-kytkennällä (post phase-inverter master volume) toimivia master volume -säätimiä, koska tällä tavalla toteutettu master volume vaikuttaa vähiten vahvistimen soundiin.

Black Prince -kombon takaseinä on Fender-tyylisesti avoin.

Takapaneelista löytyy lähtöjä lisäkaiuttimille, sekä liitin kombon mukaan tulevalle jalkakytkimelle.

Tällainen on näky, kun takaseinä on irrotettu Bluetone-kombosta.

Black Prince Reverb on täysputkikone ja putkivarustus on seuraavanlainen (oikealta vasempaan):

Ensimmäinen 12AX7 on kombon etuasteputki. Kaiun send ja return toimivat yhden 12AT7- ja yhden 12AX7-putken varassa. Viimeinen 12AX7 hoitaa sekä vahvarin vaiheenkääntämistä että tremolo-efektin tuotantoa.

Black Prince lähtee Bluetonen pajalta kahdella 6V6GT-pääteputkella, jotka tuottavat noin 20 wattia lähtötehoa. Tätä komboa pystyy myös käyttämään – biasoinnin jälkeen – kahdella 6L6GC-putkella, jolloin lähtöteho nousee lähelle 30 wattia.

Tämän kombon lyhyt jousikaikutankki tulee MOD:n valikoimasta.

Bluetone on valinnut Warehouse Guitar Speakersin Retro 10 -kaiuttimen uutuuskomboonsa, vaikka tämä on ihan erilainen kaiutin kuin vanhoissa Fendereissä käytetty Jensen.

Valinta oli kuitenkin tietoinen ja monien kokeilujen tulos:

Tehonkestoltaan ehkä hieman ”ylimitoitettu” WGS Retro varmistaa, että Black Prince Reverbin soundi pysyy mahdollisimman puhtaana ja dynaamisena. ”Britti-soundiin” viritetty luonne taas tekee Bluetone-kombon soundista tukevamman ja isomman.

Voi pojat, tästä soundista voi tulla riippuvainen! Ainakin minun tapauksessani vain muutaman soinnun soittaminen riitti herättämään ajatuksia pikalainan ottamisesta.

On hyvin vaikea kuvailla tarkoin, mitä se on, mutta juuri tällaiselta puhtaan sähkökitaran pitää soida! Soundi on puhdas ja dynaaminen, mutta ei koskaan kylmä tai kliininen. Kombon sointi on kuulas ja raikas, muttei ärsyttävän terävä. Bassokielet soivat tukevasti, mutta ne pysyvät kuitenkin selkeinä.

Lyhyen MOD-jousikaiun soundi on yllättävän monitahoinen ja tiheä, ja sitä on tarjolla hyvinkin runsaasti. Myös Black Prince Reverbin tremolo toimii esimerkillisesti – tarjolla on kaikenlaisia tremolomuotoja kevyestä ja hitaasta hyvin nopeaan ja rankkaan vatkaukseen.

Tässä pätkässä esitetään Telecasterilla Bluetone Black Prince Reverb -kombon kuivaa soundia, sekä kombon kaiku- ja tremolo-efektit:

Black Prince säilyttää myös mallikkaasti eri kitaroiden soundillisia eroja. Näissä kolmessa pätkissä soivat Fender Telecaster…

Kombon erittäin terve puhdas soundi toimii myös todella hyvin efektipedaalien kanssa. Demobiisissä on käytetty – Black Princen oman tremolon ja kaiun lisäksi – analogista chorus-pedaalia, sekä Tube Screamer -tyylinen säröpedaali.

Komppikitarana toimii Fender Stratocaster, kun taas soolo-osuudet on soitettu Hamer USA Studio Custom -kitaralla:

Bluetone Black Prince Reverb on mielestäni erittäin laadukas valinta koti- ja studiovahvistimeksi, sekä sellaisille keikoille, joissa ei tarvita lavalla suuria äänenvoimakkuuksia (tai joissa mikitys ja monitorointi toimii hyvin).

Black Prince Reverb on kätevän kokoinen boutique-luokan putkikombo loistavalla clean soundilla, täyteläisellä jousikaiulla ja tyylikkäällä tremolo-efektillä.

Vahvistinta ei ole pilattu lapsellisella putkivoodoolla tai sekavalla graafisella toteutuksella, vaan vankalla asialinjalla mennään – ja hyvä niin!

Tämä on käsintehty, kotimainen laatuvahvistin. Tämän valossa pidän Black Prince Reverbin hintaa jopa melko edullisena.

Review: Spin X guitar cable (aka Mad Professor RED Cable)

N.B.:

When I wrote the original (Finnish) version of this review, the company behind this guitar lead, Spindeco Oy, had been making tentative noises about marketing the cable using the Spin X brand name. Since then I have been informed that Spindeco won’t start marketing this lead, after all. The cable will continue to be sold as the Mad Professor RED Cable – same specifications, different colour.

For the sake of clarity, the English version the review will refer to the product as the Spin X cable, too.

Seldom has there been this amount of Internet chatter and general hysteria about any guitar accessory, as there has been about the Finnish Spin X cable, which is only a guitar lead of approximately 75 cm length, with two giant 1/4-inch connectors (a female input; a male output).

The Spin X cable (sold for 129 € as the RED Cable by Mad Professor) is manufactured by a Finnish company called Spindeco Oy. The cable promises to improve the efficiency of its conductors by means of a nano-electrical phenomenon, known as the electron spin. Special graphite-coated conductors are meant to rearrange the signal-carrying electrons in such a way, that the signal flow is improved. Spindeco claim that the main benefit of this technology in a guitar lead is an improved phase correlation between the different frequency bands of the signal. Apparently, traditional leads tend to pass high frequencies quicker than low frequencies, which tend to arrive at the amplifier with a very tiny time lag.

Using the benefits of the noble search engine, I quickly ascertained that the electron spin is, in fact, no voodoo, but rather generally acknowledged quantum physics. Still, we guitarists are interested in audible results; we ask questions like:

Does the Spin X cable do what it says on the tin? Is there truly a discernible difference in sound? Do I have to own one if I want to be a Tone God?

I was given a Spin X cable for reviewing purposes.

There’s been some rumours about miniature transformers, or buffers, inside the lead’s giant connectors, which is why I had to take a closer look inside. Nope, it’s just a bunch of different conductors – some left unused – attached with traditional soldering tin!

The short length of the Spin X cable has also been the centre of some speculation. Guitarists have been asking: ”Why is it just a short extension cord, instead of a full-length guitar lead?”

Take a closer look at these pictures (click on them for a larger view), and the answer becomes rather obvious:

It seems that Spin X relies on two identical conductors to function in the desired way. One is the hot (signal) conductor, while the other goes to earth (ground). But using this type of cable results in a less-than-ideal setup, when it comes to mains hum and electromagnetic interference.

Traditional guitar cables are built as coaxial leads, where a centre conductor carries the guitar signal. The centre conductor runs inside a layer of insulation, which in turn is covered by one (or several) shields. The shield is connected to ground and serves two purposes – one: its the audio signal’s earth; two: it’s a Faraday cage that shields the signal conductor from extraneous interference, like mains hum.

If you connect only the Spin X cable to an amp, and turn up the volume, you will be greeted by an unacceptable amount of hum and microphonics, but as soon as you plug your regular lead into the Spin X, all the noises disappear. This means that the Spin X needs the traditional, coaxial guitar lead to do away with all the interference.

The Spin X cable seemed reasonably rugged and well made.

The only thing that bothered me in the road-worthiness department were the badly secured strain relief cuffs in both connectors of our review sample.

I wanted to find out, whether you could ”measure” any real speeding up of the guitar signal in the confines of a home studio. I came up with the following setup:

I recorded the acoustic sound of a Fender Stratocaster using an AKG C3000 condenser microphone onto the left channel of a stereo signal, while direct-injecting the high-impedance guitar signal going through a Whirlwind Leader cable into my sound card.

As you can see above, the DI’ed guitar signal (waveform on the bottom) is a tiny bit behind the miked up acoustic sound.

This picture shows clearly that the Spin X doesn’t ”speed up” the guitar signal in any way noticeable in a standard audio sequencer.

The listening test also doesn’t reveal any noticeable differences between using only the traditional lead or adding the Spin X cable. If anything, adding the Spin X might even add a minuscule amount of time lag to proceedings, at least to my ears:

I then recorded a series of sound clips, using my trusty Blackstar HT-1R valve combo. In each clip the first half is played through just the traditional Whirlwind lead, while the second half has the Spin X cable added into the signal chain.

For comparison purposes here’s a clip of a Fender Stratocaster DI’ed into the sequencer (first half Whirlwind only; second half Whirlwind plus Spin X):

Next I took the Spin X to the guitarist of Rock-Ola & The Freewheelers. Sami Saarinen went through several different vintage and custom shop guitars and amps at band rehearsal volumes – both straight into the amp, as well as using a pedalboard.

The differences in sound between using only a traditional guitar lead and adding the Spin X cable seemed a little bit more pronounced using Sami’s setup at higher volume levels, compared to what I could make out in my home studio.

For the last bit I wanted to make sure that the Spin X cable’s function was not dependent on valve technology:

I borrowed my son’s Marshall MG30CFX combo for a short test run. All sound clips start with only the Whirlwind cable connected; the Spin X comes in at the halfway point.

Based on my tests I have to state that the Spin X cable really does add a little ”something” to the sound. The Spin X’ effect is more easily spotted with a quality guitar and a quality amp at slightly higher volume levels. It also seems that the tonal effects are more pronounced in singlecoil-equipped guitars – like a Stratocaster, a Telecaster, a Les Paul Junior, or a non-reverse Firebird – than when using humbucker-carrying guitar models.

The Spin X’ ”sound” is similar to the effect a buffer amp has on a long signal chain. You will get a slightly more refined top end, a whiff of added presence and openness, as well as a tighter and more pronounced bass. Strats and Teles will sound a tiny bit more HiFi, while a P-90 pickup will lose a little of its lower-mid congestion.

The Spin X seems to make the signal louder by an inkling, but this could also be a mere psychoacoustic effect, caused by the added presence.

There’s no simple and straight answer to the question, whether the Spin X cable genuinely ”improves” your tone. Many Rockabilly, Punk or Metal guitarists wouldn’t want to make their guitars sound ”more polite”. Some styles and genres simply demand a gritty, unruly top end, and some chunky mid-range grind.

For some tone hounds and sound aesthetes, however – players following the in the footsteps of guitarists, such as David Gilmour, Michael Landau or Eric Johnson – the Spin X cable’s tiny tonal changes might make all the difference.

In any case, it is up to you to decide how much this minuscule fine-tuning of your guitar signal is worth to you.

Testipenkissä: Spin X -johto (Mad Professor RED Cable)

Spindecosta tuli viesti, että firma ei tulekaan markkinoimaan Spin X -johtoa omalla nimellään, vaan että myynti jatkuu Mad Professor RED Cable nimellä!

Harva vempain on viime aikoina synnyttänyt kitaristien keskuudessa samankaltaista kuhinaa kuin suomalainen Spin X -johto, ja kyse on sentään ”vain” noin 75 cm pitkästä ja kahdella valtavalla liittimellä varustetusta kaapelista.

Spin X -johdon (hinta ei vielä vahvistettu) takana on suomalainen yritys Spindeco Oy. Spin X -johdossa johtimien hyötysuhdetta parannetaan hyödyntämällä elektronin spin -nimistä nanoteknologista ilmiötä. Johdossa olevilla hiilellä päällystetyillä erikoisjohtimilla järjestetään signaalia kuljettavat elektronit ikään kuin siistimpään järjestykseen, mikä ilmeisesti nopeuttaa signaalin kulkua johtimen läpi. Kitarajohdossa spin-ilmiön päähyöty on – valmistajan myyntivastaavan mukaan – että kaikki taajuuskaistat saapuvat samanaikaisesti vahvistimen tulojakkiin, kun perinteisessä johdossa bassot saapuvat hieman muita taajuuksia jäljessä.

Googlaamalla selviää hyvin nopeasti, että elektronien spin ei ole mitään huuhaata, vaan aitoa kvanttifysiikkaa. Meitä kitaristeja kuitenkin kiinnostavat eniten seuraavat kysymykset:

Toimiiko Spin X -johto toivotulla tavalla? Onko ero selvästi havaittavissa? Onko pakko hankkia tällainen johto?

Sain Spindecon Jerry Ala-Leppilammelta yhden Spin X -johdon testattavaksi.

Johdon isoja liittimiä auki ruuvaamalla selvisi heti, että johdossa käytetään todellakin ainoastaan johtimia, eikä esimerkiksi plugiin upotettuja muuntajia tai vastaavaa.

Monet kitaristit kysyvät myös miksi Spin X -johto on niin lyhyt, ja miksi se on saatavilla pelkästään ”jatkojohtona”, eikä tavallisena kitarajohtona. Näissä kuvissa näkyy vastaus:

Spin X:n toimiminen ilmeisesti edellyttää sitä, että johdon kaksi johdinta (signaali ja maa) ovat rakenteeltaan täysin identtisiä, mutta tästä seuraa samalla, että erikoisjohto on selvästi häiriöherkempi kuin perinteinen koaksiaalinen kitarajohto.

Tavallisessa kitarajohdossa signaali kulkee johdon keskijohtimessa, sen ympärille on laitettu eristys (ja usein myös johdon staattisia käsittelyääniä vähentävää alumiini- tai grafiittifoliota). Tiivis kuparilangasta tehty verkko (vaippa) toimii maajohtimena, ja suojaa Faraday-häkkinä kitarasignaalia tehokkaasti ulkoisia elektromagneettisia häiriöitä vastaan.

Kun liittää vahvistimen tuloon pelkästään Spin X -johdon kuuluu (isoilla gain- ja/tai volume-asetuksilla) selkeästi vahvistimelta tulevan muuntajahuminan, sekä johdon hiplaamisessa syntyviä käsittelyääniä. Heti kun tavallinen kitarajohto on liitetty Spin X -johtoon, sekä brummi että mikrofoninen rähinä loppuu kuin seinään.

Spin X -johdon erikoisjohto vaikuttaa laadukkaalta ja mekaanisesti kestävältä. Myös juotokset olivat siistejä.

Testijohdossa vain hyvin löysästi ja huolimattomasti laitettu vedonpoisto (molemmissa liittimissä!) aiheutti hieman hämmennystä.

Halusin selvittää, onko elektronien nopeusero mitattavissa kotistudio-olosuhteissa, ja tein seuraavanlaisen kokeilun:

Äänitin Fender Stratocasterin akustista ääntä AKG C3000 -kondensaattorimikrofonilla vasempaan kanavaan, samalla kun korkea impendanssinen kitarasignaali meni tavallista kitarajohtoa (Whirlwind Leader) pitkin suoraan äänikortille.

Kitarasignaali (oikea kanava) oli aavistuksen verran mikkisignaalia jäljessä, kuten tässä kuvassa näkyy.

Spin X -johdon käyttö ei ainakaan nopeuttanut signaalin kulkua sen verran, että se olisi audiosekvensserillä näkyvissä.

Myös kuulohavainnolla viive kuulostaa hyvin samanlaiselta, ehkä jopa hiuksen verran pidemmältä Spin X -johtoa käytettäessä:

Äänitin koesarjan eri kitaroilla Blackstar HT-1R -putkikombolla niin, että jokaisessa klipissä ensimmäinen puolisko on äänitetty pelkästään Whirlwind-johdolla ja sitten toisessa on lisätty Spin X -johto signaalitiehen.

Seuraavaksi menin Spin X -johdon kanssa Rock-Ola & The Freewheelers -yhtyen kitaristille. Sami Saarisen kanssa kokeiltiin Spin X -johdon vaikutuksia hieman suuremmalla volyymillä eri vintage- ja custom shop -kitaroiden ja -vahvistimien kanssa, pedaalilaudalla ja ilman.

Valitettavasti tästä sessiosta ei ole äänityksiä, mutta soundillisesti erot Spin X -johdolla ja ilman olivat jopa selvemmät kuin kotistudio-oloissa.

Viimeisenä halusin saada selvillä, onko Spin X:n toiminta kytköksissä putkitekniikkaan vai toimiiko johto myös edullisen transistorivahvistimen kanssa.

Äänitin siis muutaman pätkän poikani Marshall MG30CFX -kombon kautta. Kaikki pätkät alkavat ilman erikoisjohtoa, joka tulee toisessa puoliskossa mukaan kuvaan.

Testien perusteella minun täytyy todeta, että ”jotain” todella tapahtuu, silloin kun Spin X -johtoa käytetään. Johdon vaikutus tulee selkeämmin esiin laadukkailla vahvistimilla ja hieman isommalla volyymillä kuin kotisohvalla kerrostalossa. Jotenkin tuntuu myös siitä, että yksikelaisilla mikrofoneilla varustetut kitarat – esimerkiksi Stratot, Telet, LP Junior, non-reverse Firebird – hyötyvät erikoisjohdon tuomista muutoksista enemmän kuin humbucker-kitarat.

Spin X -johdon ”soundi” tavalliseen kitarajohtoon verrattuna on lähellä laadukkaan bufferin tuomia lisäyksiä pitkässä signaaliketjussa. Spin X:n kanssa soundissa on vähemmän raapivaa terävyyttä diskantissa, enemmän avoimuutta ja kiiltoa ylä-middlen preesensalueella, sekä tiukempi ja tarkempi bassotoisto. Fender Stratocasterit ja Telecasterit saavat aavistuksen verran lisää hifimäisyyttä ja P-90-mikrofoneista katoaa pieni annos tukkoisuutta etenkin clean-soundeissa.

Spin X:n kautta signaalitaso tuntuu myös aavistuksen verran korkeammalta, mikä toki voi olla pelkästään psykoakustinen ilmiö.

Kysymykseen onko soundi ”parempi” Spin X -johdolla ei kuitenkaan pysty vastaamaan yksiselitteisesti. Rockabilly- tai Punk-kitaristeille kovan ja kirskuvan diskantin lievä vaimennus voi olla myös huono asia, myös keskialueen siistiminen ei ole välttämättä jokaisessa tapauksessa (perinne-Blues, Swamp Rock) toivottu lisäys.

Todelliselle soundiesteetikolle – siis David Gilmourin, Michael Landaun tai Eric Johnsonin kaltaiselle soittajalle – Spin X -johdon tuomat lievät, mutta tyylikkäät, muutokset voivat muodostaa sen paljon kaivatun pisteen iin päällä.

Siihen, kuinka paljon on valmis maksamaan Spin X:n tuomasta lisäsilauksesta, jokaisen itse on vastattava.
